Structured Assessment and Treatment Planning

Is the Dogma of Using the Largest Diameter still Valid?

Bilal Al-Nawas

The lecture gives an overview of the existing evidence on the use of narrow-diameter implants for a well-defined range of indications based on the proceedings of the 5th ITI Consensus Conference. Prof. Al-Nawas discusses the technical complications of reducing implant diameter in the molar region and the different fracture types that may result. He also presents studies on narrow-diameter implants fabricated from titanium-zirconium alloy and makes an argument for future comparative studies on bone augmentation vs narrow-diameter implants. In addition, future potential indications are discussed.

At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to...

  • describe potential clinical indications for narrow diameter-implants
  • explain the different levels of evidence for mini-implants and narrow-diameter implants for different clinical indications
  • recognize that placement of narrow diameter implants as an alternative to bone grafting procedures does not reduce the complexity of the treatment
